KOREA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY

Background of School:

On April, 19, 1958, Korea Christian University (KCU) received its original charter as a Korea Christian Institute under the leadership of its founders, L. Haskell Chesshir and other American missionaries.  The school name was changed in 1963 to Christian Institute of the Church of Christ.

The school moved to its present location in western Seoul in 1961 and was renamed Korea Christian College in 1974 and Korea Christian University in 1997 . KCU has grown to become an institution preparing students for the needs of a modern Korea.  The original Bible school has expanded into a multi-disciplinary university that includes departments in Biblical Studies (Bible/Mission), Social Welfare (Child Welfare/Social Work), Music (Vocal/Composition/Piano), Information and Technology Management, and the Liberal Arts.  KCU has a graduate school in Biblical Studies, Social Welfare and Education.  The educational purpose of the graduate school is to advance research in these key areas.

KCU has also extended its educational mission to a LIfe-Education Center and to a Community Education Center.  In all fields of study, fundamental Christian values of giving to others and serving the community are part of the KCU tradition.

Based on Christian principles, education at KCU has been training Christian students to have dedicated faith, professional expertise, and the desire to serve and to give benefits to the community.  Our objective is to train globally minded leaders who can cope with society's rapid changes that have been created by the Information Age.

SCHOOL MOTTO

"The things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also." (2 Timothy 2:2)

CAMPUS FACILITIES

Around the campus are facilities to channel and enhance the energy and aspirations of young people.

LIBRARY

The campus library has a generous collection of academic textbooks, periodicals, reference materials, and CD-ROMS to help researchers and students.  Although most of the library's holdings are in Korean language, the library does have publications in English and other languages as well.  Library data is stored electronically and is available over the internet as www.kcu.ac.kr

CAMPUS BROADCASTING

The campus broadcasting station has been providing timely newscasts and a forum for students to express their opinions.

NEWSPAPER CENTER

The Newspaper Center publishes a campus newspaper that is designed to inform students about campus events and activities.  In addition to general news, the paper also publishes feature stories, short research papers and creative works written by students.

DORMITORY

The Dormitory building is a three-story structure with a chapel and study room.  The dormitory's admission priorities are to accommodate students whose homes are outside of the Seoul metropolitan area and students who are physically challenged.  Students who reside in the dormitory are encouraged to lead a morally harmonious life with other students and to concentrate on their studies.

MUSIC BUILDING

In addition to providing classroom facilities for the training in vocal, composition and piano, the building houses several practice rooms where students can hone their skills in music. Music holds a distinct place in the church as well as being a pervasive part of daily life.  Nurturing artists who fill the world with the sound of inspiration and hope is, therefore, the aim of the Department of Music

JOB INFORMATION CENTER

The Job Information Center posts information on full and part-time jobs that may be available for students.  The center also offers counseling and testing services to guide students toward jobs that are suitable for their abilities and interests.

COMPUTER CENTER

The center is responsible for installing and maintaining the campus's local are network and its numerous computers.  Installing and updating software is a service of the center that most of us on campus greatly appreciate.

PUBLISHING CENTER

To help achieve academic goals, the Publishing Center prepares manuscripts for publication.  Books in the Liberal Arts and books for teaching and reference, as well as newsletters, brochures, religious materials, and other printed documents are produced by the center.

LANGUAGE LABORATORY

Students are encouraged to study English through the use of audio tapes, video tapes, and CD-ROMS.  Specialized language training software is also available, which many students enjoy using for studying a foreign language.

COMPUTER LABS

To prepare students for coping with the massive amount of news and information that strikes us every day, KCU offers computer training that helps students to utilize the power and speed of modern, personal computers.  In addition to the computerized Language Lab, there are two other computer labs that are available for student use.  One lab has 60 high speed personal computers that is often used for instruction, while a second computer lab has 30 computers and several printers that is always available to students.

STUDENT LOUNGE

The fall of 2003 saw the opening of the newest building on campus, a student lounge.  The facility sells snacks and several kinds of coffee and teas with the purpose of providing a friendly atmosphere where students can socialize or simply study together.
